Fundamental studies of light-matter interaction in the quantum limit of solid state systems

The possibility to study fundamental light-matter interaction effects in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics in solid state is a driving force in the development of modern semiconductor technology. Self-assembled quantum dots integrated into high quality microcavities represent an ideal model system. Here, excitons confined in quantum dots can interact with the light field of discrete cavity modes which allows on to control their spontaneous emission process. Our goal is to investigate coupled quantum dot – microcavities under variation of external parameters such as the magnetic field in a quantum optical testbed. This will allow us to explore the underlying physics and to identify future applications of such systems in quantum information technology.
